Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take urgent steps to address the severe flood situation in Assam, seeking both immediate financial assistance and a long-term strategy to tackle the state’s recurring floods.
In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, Singh described the current situation as exceptionally serious and urged the Centre to officially classify the Assam floods as a “national disaster”. He also sought a dedicated relief package for people whose homes, farms and livelihoods have been affected by the rising floodwaters.

Singh highlighted the extensive impact of the floods across several districts, including Charaideo, Sivasagar and Jorhat. He claimed that more than 10 lakh people had been affected and that the disaster had resulted in over 100 deaths.
Agriculture and Livelihoods Suffer Heavy Losses
The AAP leader said the flooding had caused extensive damage to agricultural fields, with large areas of farmland submerged and standing crops destroyed. According to him, the losses have placed additional pressure on farmers who depend heavily on agriculture for their income.
He also drew attention to the loss of cattle and other livestock. Many rural households, he said, had lost animals in the floodwaters, further worsening their financial difficulties. Damage to houses and settlements has reportedly forced numerous families to leave their homes and seek safer locations.
Singh also raised concerns about shortages of food, safe drinking water and essential medicines in several affected areas. He warned that prolonged flooding and inadequate sanitation could increase the possibility of disease outbreaks.
Appeal for Immediate Relief and Long-Term Measures
The MP urged the Union government to provide compensation to farmers, livestock owners and families whose homes have been damaged or destroyed. He also proposed allowing Members of Parliament to utilise their MPLAD funds for emergency relief, reconstruction and rehabilitation in flood-hit areas.
At the same time, Singh stressed that Assam needs more than temporary assistance every monsoon. He called for a comprehensive and permanent strategy to reduce the state’s vulnerability to recurring floods.
Referring to earlier commitments to address Assam’s flood problem, Singh urged the Prime Minister to pursue a long-term solution involving effective flood management and infrastructure development.
He said the people of Assam should not have to face the same cycle of devastation year after year and appealed to the Centre to respond quickly to the present crisis while working towards a lasting solution.
