The investigation into the mysterious death of 18-year-old Anwesha Saikia in Jorhat has taken a significant turn after the main accused, Aryan Goswami, denied any involvement in her death and claimed that he had instead attempted to save her.
Aryan was arrested from Rangajan in Golaghat district on Tuesday night in connection with the case. Two of his female acquaintances, Monalisa Nath and Arpita Kakoty, were also taken into custody by the police. The three were subsequently taken to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) for mandatory medical examinations.

While being taken to the hospital, Aryan spoke briefly about the allegations against him. He denied killing Anwesha and claimed that she had been lying on the floor after allegedly consuming drugs at a party. According to him, his actions were aimed at getting her help rather than causing her harm.
Anwesha, a resident of Jorhat, had reportedly attended a gathering at a second-floor apartment in Gauri Enclave on Dohabora Road on Saturday. Police are investigating allegations that drugs were present at the gathering. Monalisa and Arpita, who were also reportedly present at the party, later accompanied Anwesha to JMCH.
Videos that have surfaced in connection with the incident reportedly show Aryan and others carrying or dragging Anwesha from the apartment towards the parking area before arranging an autorickshaw to take her to the hospital. Medical personnel at JMCH subsequently declared her brought dead.
However, Anwesha’s family has raised serious allegations against Aryan and his associates, claiming that she was assaulted and that visible marks on her face and neck suggest possible foul play. These allegations are yet to be established, and police are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
Meanwhile, residents of Gauri Enclave have reportedly told authorities that gatherings involving Aryan and his friends were allegedly common at the apartment. Some residents have also raised concerns about an earlier incident involving Aryan and the apartment’s security guard. They claimed that an altercation took place in August 2025 and that a complaint was subsequently submitted to the Jorhat Superintendent of Police.
Aryan’s mother, Jharna Goswami, has also been questioned by police. She reportedly stated that she was not at the apartment complex when the gathering took place.
With conflicting claims emerging from the accused and Anwesha’s family, investigators are examining available video footage, witness statements and other evidence to establish what happened before and after the teenager was taken to the hospital. The precise circumstances of her death will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation and medical examination.
