Cape Verde’s Historic World Cup Campaign
Cape Verde could prove to be a particularly intriguing opponent for India after their eye-catching campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Currently ranked 64th in the world, the African nation made its World Cup debut and advanced to the last 32 after remaining unbeaten in the group stage.

Cape Verde held eventual champions Spain to a goalless draw, before playing out an entertaining 2-2 draw against Uruguay. They also drew 0-0 with Saudi Arabia, securing their passage to the knockout rounds without suffering a defeat.

Their historic journey eventually came to an end against defending champions Argentina in the round of 32. Cape Verde twice came from behind before Argentina finally secured a 3-2 victory after extra time.

The tournament represented a landmark moment for the island nation, which became the smallest country and the second least-populated nation after Iceland to qualify for a FIFA World Cup.

For India, a potential meeting with Cape Verde would offer another demanding test against a side that has already demonstrated its ability to compete with some of the world’s strongest teams. If finalised, the fixture would add further excitement to an already significant international window for the Blue Tigers.
