Heavy downpours triggered widespread devastation across Arunachal Pradesh on Friday evening, leaving four workers dead in a massive landslide in Upper Subansiri district and five Indian Army personnel missing after a flash flood swept through a camp in Dibang Valley district.
The landslide struck a road construction site along the Keojaring-Byaching route in Upper Subansiri, burying workers beneath mud and heavy debris. Officials confirmed four fatalities, identifying the victims as Tadu Baki, Taji Rai, Markosh Basumatari, and Babul Ali. Search teams led by the police, fire and emergency services, and State Disaster Response Force personnel have recovered the body of Babul Ali while continuing clearing operations at the site.
In Dibang Valley, a sudden flash flood inundated the Pasu Pani Army Camp of the 5th Grenadiers, washing away two troop shelters. Seven soldiers were initially swept away by the surge of water. While rescue teams managed to pull two personnel to safety shortly after the incident, five others—identified as Havaldar Upendar, Kundan, Vinod, Aditya, and Samunda—remain missing.
A multi-agency search and rescue operation is actively underway in both affected districts. Specialized teams from the 5th Grenadiers, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, the General Reserve Engineer Force, and local authorities are working alongside additional SDRF units to trace the missing personnel despite challenging weather conditions and terrain.
