Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Receives Yet Another Death Threat on Social Media

A youth identified as Mubarak Ali, allegedly wrote that he would kill the Chief Minister if someone paid him Rs 2 crore.

Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has once again been threatened with death through social media, with a youth from Juriya in Nagaon district allegedly threatening to shoot the Chief Minister in central Assam for Rs 2 crore.

The latest threat was reportedly made through a Facebook comment by a youth identified as Mubarak Ali, who allegedly wrote that he would kill the Chief Minister if someone paid him Rs 2 crore. His Facebook profile reportedly identifies him as a resident of Gadaimari in Juriya, with Abdul Baten named as his father.

The comment also allegedly carried the phrases “Pakistan Zindabad” and “Hindustan Murdabad”, written in English.

The development comes just two days after police arrested three people over another alleged social media death threat against Chief Minister Sarma. Bhuragaon Police had arrested Abdul Mutaleb of Baralimari in Morigaon district along with two members of his family.

Mutaleb was accused of posting a comment during the Chief Minister’s Facebook Live session offering to kill him in return for Rs 1 crore. He later alleged that an unidentified group had misused his photograph to issue the death threat in his name.

The fresh incident has added to concerns surrounding repeated threats against the Chief Minister on social media.

After the latest post came to light, police visited Mubarak Ali’s residence in Juriya on Monday. Ali was not present at the house, but police questioned his family members as part of their inquiry.

Local residents claimed that Ali is currently working in Kerala and has been living there for around 10 years. They also said he does not know how to read or write.

Residents have consequently expressed suspicion that Ali’s Facebook account may have been hacked and that the threatening comment could have been posted by someone else. However, the claim remains unverified and the actual circumstances are expected to emerge only after the police investigation is completed.
