Death Threat Against Assam CM Appears During Live Independence Day Broadcast

A disturbing incident was reported during the live-streamed Independence Day celebrations in Guwahati on Saturday after a social media user allegedly posted a death threat targeting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The comment, which appeared during the live broadcast, has raised security concerns and is likely to prompt scrutiny by Assam Police and cybercrime authorities.

According to the comment visible during the live session, a user operating under the name Abdul Mutaleb allegedly offered to kill the chief minister in return for a payment of Rs 1 crore. The post reportedly included a mobile phone number and appeared to invite people to contact the user regarding the alleged offer.

The comment also reportedly contained a slogan expressing support for Pakistan, adding another contentious element to the post. The alleged threat emerged while the Independence Day programme was being watched online, highlighting concerns about the use of public social media broadcasts for posting threatening or provocative messages.

The incident is expected to come under the attention of Assam Police and relevant cybercrime officials. Investigators may examine the social media account associated with the comment, verify the identity of the person operating it, trace the phone number mentioned in the post and determine whether the threat was genuine or intended as provocation.

Authorities could also investigate the account’s previous online activity and look for communications with other individuals that might provide context to the alleged threat. Digital records may be examined to establish when and from where the post was made.

Given the nature of the allegation and the fact that it was made during a live public event involving the chief minister, security agencies are likely to take the matter seriously. Any further action would depend on the outcome of the investigation and verification of the social media account and its claims.
