With temperatures continuing to remain high across Assam, the Lakhimpur district education authorities have decided to alter school hours as a precautionary measure to safeguard students from excessive heat.
Under the revised arrangement, schools across different levels—from lower primary to senior higher secondary—will start their academic activities earlier in the morning. According to an official directive, regular classes will commence at 7 am, allowing students to complete most of their school hours before temperatures reach their peak.

The new schedule will take effect from Monday and will remain applicable until the education authorities issue further instructions. The decision has been taken in response to the prevailing hot and uncomfortable weather conditions in the district, with student well-being cited as the key consideration.
As per the order issued by Lakhimpur District Circle Inspector of Schools and District Primary Education Officer Bedabrata Gogoi, lower primary students will be released at 11 am. Students studying at the upper primary level will finish their school day at 11:30 am.
For students enrolled in high schools, higher secondary institutions and senior higher secondary classes, the revised school hours will continue until 12 noon.
The change in schedule will apply to schools operating under different management systems across Lakhimpur district. This includes government, provincialised and private educational institutions.
The education department’s decision comes as Assam experiences intensified heat conditions, prompting concerns about students spending extended periods outdoors or travelling during the hottest part of the day. Starting classes earlier is expected to reduce their exposure to elevated temperatures during the afternoon.
Authorities have also indicated that the revised arrangement will remain in place until further orders, meaning school timings could be reviewed again depending on weather conditions. The move reflects growing attention to protecting students from heat-related discomfort and potential health risks during the ongoing spell of high temperatures.
