The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) observed India’s 80th Independence Day with patriotic enthusiasm and a strong sense of national pride at its campus in Ri-Bhoi on Saturday.
The celebrations were held at the D. D. Lapang Block (Amenity Centre) in the presence of USTM Chancellor Shri Mahbubul Hoque, Vice Chancellor Prof. G. D. Sharma, Director of Medical Administration Prof. Dr. A. C. Kataki, along with principals, deans, faculty members, staff and students.

The programme featured a special commemoration of 150 years of Vande Mataram, followed by the ceremonial unfurling of the national flag, the singing of the National Anthem and an oath-taking ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque reflected on India’s progress since Independence and highlighted the responsibility of young people in shaping the nation’s future. He emphasised the potential of India’s youth to contribute through their ideas, aspirations, skills and commitment to national development.
The celebrations were aligned with the broader vision of “Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat @2047”, placing young Indians at the centre of the country’s journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047.
As part of the programme, representatives of the Brahma Kumaris led the Nasha Mukt Bharat Pledge, encouraging students to adopt healthy and responsible lifestyles while reaffirming USTM’s commitment to nurturing an empowered and socially conscious younger generation.
The campus also witnessed a range of cultural and recreational activities. Students participated in a Flag March, presented a patriotic performance and joined the Tricolour Balloon Release, adding colour and energy to the Independence Day celebrations.
The programme concluded with recreational games and the final match of the Inter-Departmental Football Tournament, bringing students and members of the university community together in a spirit of camaraderie.
With the national flag flying prominently over the USTM campus, the celebrations concluded with a renewed commitment among the university community to contribute to a stronger, progressive and developed India by 2047.
