Two individuals were arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) during an operation conducted aboard the Sairang Express after officials allegedly recovered a large consignment of narcotics valued at around Rs 5 crore in the illegal market.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Murtaza Ahmed and Mehrajul Haque, both reportedly residents of Karimganj district in Assam. The operation was carried out following intelligence inputs received by the NCB regarding the suspected movement of a significant quantity of illegal drugs through the railway network.

Acting on the information, NCB personnel mounted an operation on the train and intercepted the two suspects. During the search, officials allegedly recovered a substantial quantity of narcotic substances. The seized consignment is estimated to have a black-market value of approximately Rs 5 crore.
Preliminary findings reportedly indicate that the drugs had been procured from Dimapur and were being transported for further distribution in the region. Investigators are now working to establish the complete route followed by the consignment and determine who was expected to receive it.
During the operation, another young man who was allegedly accompanying the suspects reportedly attempted to escape after noticing the presence of the enforcement personnel. NCB officials immediately pursued him as part of the operation and succeeded in preventing the suspected associate from getting away.
The latest arrests have prompted investigators to examine whether the two accused were operating independently or were connected to a broader drug trafficking network. Authorities are expected to question the arrested individuals regarding the source of the narcotics, the circumstances surrounding their procurement and the intended destination of the consignment.
Investigators will also seek information about other people who may have been involved in arranging the transportation or distribution of the drugs. The agency is examining available evidence to identify the wider network, if any, behind the alleged trafficking operation.
Further details regarding the precise type and quantity of narcotics recovered are expected as the investigation progresses. Authorities are also likely to disclose additional information once the seizure and interrogation procedures are completed.
