A 1989-batch IAS officer belonging to the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, Suchiang served in several important administrative capacities during her long career in public service. Her appointment as Meghalaya’s Chief Secretary marked a notable moment in the state’s administrative history, as she became the first woman from the Khasi community to reach the senior-most bureaucratic position in Meghalaya.
Suchiang assumed charge as Chief Secretary on September 30, 2021. She continued in the position until July 31, 2022, when she retired from government service. During her tenure, she was responsible for overseeing the state administration and coordinating the functioning of various government departments at a crucial level.
Her career was widely regarded as an example of the growing representation of women and indigenous communities in senior positions within the civil services. Her rise to the post of Chief Secretary was particularly significant in Meghalaya, a state where the Khasi community forms one of the major indigenous groups.
Even after her retirement, Suchiang remained remembered for her long association with public administration and her contribution to Meghalaya’s governance. Her passing has brought an end to the life and career of an officer who had broken an important barrier for women from the Khasi community in the state’s bureaucracy.
As news of her death spread, condolences were conveyed by people who had worked with her and those familiar with her public service career. Her family has remembered her as a dedicated public servant who spent decades working within the administrative system.
Rebecca V Suchiang’s legacy is expected to endure particularly because of the historic significance of her tenure as Meghalaya’s first Khasi woman Chief Secretary.
