In a commendable initiative aimed at snake conservation, noted ‘Snake Friends’ Bhaskar Jyoti Bora and Utpal Saikia have successfully protected and incubated around 80 eggs of the spectacled cobra, resulting in the hatching of 65 young snakes.
During several snake-rescue operations conducted in the Jagiroad and Morigaon areas towards the end of July this year, the two rescuers came across nearly 80 spectacled cobra eggs lying in an unsafe and vulnerable location. Recognising the importance of preserving the species’ natural life cycle, Bora and Saikia carefully relocated the eggs to a secure location and arranged for their proper incubation rather than allowing them to be destroyed.

After weeks of dedicated care and sustained efforts, 65 of the 80 eggs hatched successfully on August 18, marking a significant achievement in their conservation initiative.
Instead of keeping the hatchlings in an artificial environment, the rescuers have taken steps to release them into their natural habitat at Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary, allowing the young snakes to adapt and survive in the wild as part of the natural ecosystem.
The initiative also highlights the need to view snakes not merely with fear, but as an essential component of the ecological balance.
