The investigation into the death of Assam Police Sub-Inspector Nabajit Das has taken a fresh turn after five people were arrested in connection with the case. Das, who was posted as the officer-in-charge of the Laisong police outpost in Dima Hasao district, died after being struck by a vehicle while carrying out a night naka-checking operation.
The incident was initially considered a road accident. However, investigators have now begun examining the possibility that the officer could have been deliberately targeted while performing his duty. Police have launched a detailed probe to determine the circumstances leading to the incident and establish whether the collision was accidental or intentional.

Among those arrested is Selim Uddin, who has been identified by investigators as the main accused. Police sources have alleged that Uddin is involved in the wholesale drug trade and may have connections with a suspected narcotics network operating in Juria.
Four other individuals have also been arrested in connection with the case. They have been identified as Mohidul Islam, Uddin’s brother; Abdul Kuddus Farazi, his father; Muffazzol Islam of Boriguri; and Ruksana Khatun alias Pinki of Kadamoni Pathar in Juria. Their alleged roles in the incident are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police are particularly looking into whether the suspected drug network had any connection with the death of Das. Investigators are also examining the vehicle involved in the collision, its movements and the circumstances surrounding the naka-checking operation.
All five accused are currently in police custody as investigators continue questioning them and gathering evidence. The case has also prompted several organisations to demand strict action against those responsible and a comprehensive investigation into the suspected drug network.
Authorities are now working to establish the exact sequence of events, determine the motive behind the incident and ascertain the individual role of each arrested person. The investigation remains ongoing, with police examining all possible angles surrounding the officer’s death.
