Assam Police Observes Day of Mourning to Remember Dhemaji Blast Victims

The Assam Police on Sunday, August 16, observed a solemn “Day of Mourning” at its headquarters in Guwahati to honour the innocent lives lost in the devastating Dhemaji blast of 2004. The annual observance was organised in remembrance of the victims, including children, who were killed in the militant attack during an Independence Day gathering.

The tragic incident occurred on August 15, 2004, in Dhemaji, where a large number of people had assembled to take part in the celebrations marking India’s Independence Day. The explosion claimed innocent lives and left a lasting impact on the people of Assam.

The remembrance programme at the Assam Police headquarters was attended by senior police officials, personnel from different ranks and other members of the force. The gathering provided an opportunity to pay tribute to those who lost their lives while also reaffirming the police force’s commitment to protecting citizens and preserving peace.

As part of the observance, participants took a collective pledge to strengthen peace, social harmony and mutual respect among people belonging to different communities and sections of society. They also vowed to remain united in confronting forces that threaten human lives, public safety and the fundamental values of society.

The pledge was administered by Deputy Inspector General of Police (Administration) Pranab Jyoti Goswami. The annual Day of Mourning serves not only as a tribute to the victims of the 2004 Dhemaji tragedy but also as a reminder of the importance of peace, communal harmony and the protection of human life. The Assam Police reiterated its resolve to uphold these principles and work towards a safer and more harmonious society.
